    Weather Summary

    Shaun Tanner
Weather Underground midday recap for Wednesday, May 21, 2008. A cold front continued moving very slowly southward through the Southeast towards the Gulf Coast. Deep moisture ahead of this front produced areas of heavy rain laced with thunderstorms along the Southeast Coast. Some of these thunderstorms produced damaging hail and wind. This precipitation waned in the late morning and afternoon as the moisture source was cutoff from the front.

Meanwhile, a cold front swept through the Great Lakes and into the Northeast. Rain fell along the front through much of New England. Scattered showers also fell in the Great Lakes.

In the West, an intense storm moved into the Great Basin and Northern Rockies. The main effect of the storm was the strong winds that it produced from the Southwest through California and into the western Plains. The storm also produced areas of rain in the Rockies and some snow in the Intermountain West.

The Northeast rose into the 50s and 60s, while the Southeast saw temperatures into the 70s and 80s. The Southern Plains rose into the 80s, 90s, and some 100s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 50s and 60s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday have ranged from a morning low of 26 degrees at Mt. Washington, N.H. to a midday high of 102 degrees at Wink, Texas.

The future of wind shear: will it decrease the number of hurricanes?

    Dr. Jeff Masters

Could global warming increase wind shear over the Atlantic, potentially leading to a decrease in the frequency of Atlantic hurricanes? Several modeling studies are now predicting this, and it is a reasonable hypothesis. The most recent study, "Simulated reduction in Atlantic hurricane frequency under twenty-first-century warming conditions", was published Sunday in Nature Geosciences. The authors, led by Tom Knutson of NOAA's GFDL laboratory, showed that global warmi...

    Did you know that...

Even though everything on Earth experiences the effects of Coriolis, it is still very hard to explain. Basically, the force is an effect of motion on a rotating body (such as Earth) and it is one factor that determines wind direction. On this date in 1792, Gustave-Gaspard Coriolis, the first to describe the Coriolis force, was born.
